Barrington Tops
A twenty-five-kilometre long plateau extending between a series of extinct volcanic peaks in the Mount Royal Ranges, an easterly offshoot of the Great Escarpment. Eighty kilometres west of surf and sand, as the black cockatoo flies, one-and-a-half kilometre high mountains rise to swirling mists. On a plateau stretched between their summits, alpine meadows awash with fragile wildflowers in springtime spread out beneath snowgums' open boughs. Melted snow becomes lithe white water dancing down to the sea through ancient beech forests bathed in an ethereal green light. Pure clear water flows from sphagnum moss swamps that retain and slowly release great quantities of water from the plateau, fed by mists, melting snow and an annual rainfall exceeding fifteen hundred millimetres.

Sheba Dams
Just beyond Hanging Rock village are the dams (with a surface area of 3.6 ha) which were erected by hand over a three-week period in 1888 to serve the sluicing needs of the miners. The operation was carried out by the Mt Sheba Company which leased the water rights for the area the previous year. Today it is a lovely spot for an outing with picnic and barbecue facilities in a bush setting abundant with trees, birds, lizards, wallabies and pademelons (small kangaroo). There is also a 1.2-km bush walk. This is regarded as good fossicking country with zircons, sapphires and other semi-precious stones to be found.
Sheba Dams Reserve • Hanging Rock to Barry Station Road • Located in picturesque country at Hanging Rock on the Great Divide and only 11 km from Nundle. This is a favourite destination for day tripping and overnight camping. Activities include bushwalking, swimming, fishing and late afternoon wildlife observation. Facilities include toilets, BBQs (wood), picnic amenities, shelter shed and constructed walking trails.

More new locations will be posted when they are found during our travels.
